Abstract

The gig economy in India has witnessed remarkable growth, driven by the emergence of digital platforms like Uber, Zomato, Swiggy, Urban Company, and freelancing sites such as Upwork and Fiverr. This expansion is most visible in urban and semi-urban regions, where wider smartphone usage and affordable internet have enhanced access to online job platforms. Consequently, platform-based employment has grown rapidly, catering to the rising need for flexible and on-demand work opportunities. This research paper will explore the role of the gig economy in addressing India’s unemployment along with its opportunities and challenges.
