Abstract
Alexis Wineman holds the distinction of being the first woman with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to compete in the Miss America pageant. Diagnosed with PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified) during middle school, she had always felt different since childhood. As she matured, she faced various challenges associated with ASD, including a speech impediment, difficulties in communication, and heightened sensitivity to loud noises and other sensory experiences. Additionally, she experienced bullying due to her differences. Thankfully, her family has consistently been a source of support and motivation for her. Before receiving her autism diagnosis, neither she nor her family understood the cause of her meltdowns and challenges. However, once diagnosed, Alexis was amazed by how her siblings responded— they became like superheroes. They took her out, encouraged her to engage in activities, and assisted her with homework, demonstrating remarkable support after years of uncertainty. For others with autism, Alexis advises cultivating patience towards their siblings, just as siblings often show patience for them.
