Abstract

Rural petty haats are an integral part of the informal market system in India, particularly in agrarian areas such as Uttar Pradesh. These types of weekly or periodic marketplaces serve as important places of trading of agricultural products, forest products, livestock, and day-to-day necessities. Price formation in these markets significantly differs from that of the formal and regulated markets, as it depends on social ties, ways of negotiation, local demand-supply dynamics, institutional informality, etc. This research draws an analysis of the mechanics of price formation in rural petty haats of Uttar Pradesh, showing the role played by the sellers and buyers, the intermediaries, the asymmetry of information, and the seasonal variation. The study, which used a descriptive and analytical methodology based on secondary literature and field observations, concludes that price determination in small haats is not merely market driven but instead it is socially rooted. The research argues that an understanding of these informal pricing processes is important for the formulation of inclusive rural market policies and improved livelihood security for small farmers and minor traders.
