Abstract

Economic transformation towards Viksit Bharat requires sustained growth in output along with improvement in employment participation. This paper examines recent trends in sector-wise Gross Value Added and employment conditions in India using official data. The study analyses sector-wise Gross Value Added at constant prices for the year 2022–23 to understand the structure of production in the economy and examines changes in Worker Population Ratio between 2021–22 and 2022–23 to assess employment participation. The results show that manufacturing and construction contribute significantly to output growth, while agriculture continues to remain an important part of the production base. At the same time, employment participation has improved in the post-pandemic period, as reflected in the increase in Worker Population Ratio. However, the findings also indicate that output growth and employment expansion are not fully aligned across sectors, suggesting that growth remains concentrated while employment gains are moderate. In the context of Viksit Bharat, the study highlights the importance of aligning sectoral growth with labour absorption to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic transformation.
