Abstract

Technology has changed every aspect of our lives. It has changed the way we live, shop, do business, travel, eat, and, obviously, how we study. In the field of education, technology integration has come a long way, from Sydney L. Pressey’s teaching machine to the AI-enabled virtual classrooms of the present time. Technology has revolutionized the way we instruct, interact with students, and evaluate them. Artificial intelligence is the new buzzword in the field of academics. It has revolutionized the field of teaching and learning, and actually provides individualized and personalized learning and assessment experiences to the students. It has enormous benefits for education, but it is a double-edged sword because it works on algorithms and does not know its limits, hence it can be too dangerous and unethical too at the same time. Hence, it is the responsibility of policymakers, educators, and teachers to ensure equitable, inclusive, and gender fair use of artificial intelligence in education so that stakeholders of education receive maximum benefits from it. Several organizations, like UNESCO, OECD, and European ones, have provided various recommendations about how to use AI ethically in educational scenarios. This article will deal with the emergence of AI in education, how it has benefitted the landscape of higher education, and how one can ensure equitable and ethical use of AI in education to mitigate the harmful effects of AI and prevent the academic and gendered dishonesty generated by AI.
